My journey with Jonathan swift’s Gulliver’s Travels.

Gulliver’s travels a novel written by Jonathan swift in the year 1726.We all have heard the story of Gulliver when we were in junior classes, and i personally was really fascinated by this story. Gulliver’s travels as i knew as a child was a story about a man called Gulliver who reached an island called Lilliput accidentally,There he was tied by small threads n there were really tiny creatures around him who looked like normal humans but were very very small in size,They at first showered needle like arrows on Gulliver thinking that he might be dangerous but after much of ado Gulliver was finally successful in conveying that he intends no harm to them. The Lilliputians then started taking care of him, gave him medical treatments, ample food to eat and a place to lodge in.They did all possible things to make him feel comfortable and slowly they developed a bond with Gulliver.

In the beginning of my fourth semester,i went to buy my books with the list of books prescribed for this semester in my hand. The first book in my list was Gulliver’s travels i was quite astonished to see its name in the list.I was thinking what is wrong with the university people how can they prescribe such an easy book for the students of english hons.I use to love the hindi remake of Gulliver’s travels Janjantaram mamantaram starred by Javed jafri,i found it funny so i use to watch it every time it was telecast-ed.

Now when i bought this book i opened the content page first and to much of my surprise i saw that the book is divided into four parts and The voyage to Lilliput was just a small part of that book. The other parts were something i had never heard about ,they had a very unimpressive name which were difficult to pronounce.I closed the book and thought that my journey with Swift’s Gulliver’s travels is going to be be difficult.

One thing was clear to me that its not gonna be the story i use to love as a child.I clearly had no interest left to read the book but the course i am pursuing often forces us to read the books which we don’t intend to read.

I started reading and thankfully the first part was the one i knew so i quickly got over with it.My voyage to Lilliput with Gulliver soon got over. After reading the first part,i read one of the critical reviews about it which says “The Lilliputians ,a tiny race of people, represent much of what is petty and small minded about the English and humankind in general. They are physically and morally smaller than Gulliver. They are pompous, self important ,self serving, hypocritical and surprisingly dangerous and cruel in spite of their small sizes.”

Never ever have i thought that this cute story about tiny creatures has got a political allegory.Swift is actually trying to present the state of European government and the petty differences between religions.

I began reading the next part “The voyage to Brobdingnag”.

The story here is more or less similar to that of  Lilliput, the major difference here is the size. There Gulliver was the largest creature but here he was the smallest. The Brobdingnagian were the race of giants who were physically and morally bigger than Gulliver. He was treated as a doll or a plaything by the brobdingnagians. Here Swift has shown his anti feminist views by describing the size of the female breast so precisely and describing every minute details about it.Gulliver also discussed the English politics and society with the king.To which he was not clearly impressed,He even accused Gulliver of representing the “Most pugnacious race of Little odious vermin”.

I personally was not really happy with the second part i somewhere felt that Swift was not being reasonable enough when he wrote this.

The last two parts which i think was the worst of all.

“The voyage to Laputa”

Image

The story about a flying island where Gulliver reaches accidentally. They represent the folly of theoretical knowledge that has no relation to the human life.

The Last part “The voyage to Houyhnhms “

Image

It’s a story about an island ruled by the horses and the manlike creatures who were known as yahoos were their servants.

The last two parts of this book has disappointed me to a great extent,i cannot see a single sign of reality and not a single reason to like it and understand the deep meaning which swift is trying to convey through his book.He has used the same plot over and over again. It’s like everytime he goes for a voyage and gets stuck in an stupid island  meets different creatures who at times can be life threatening but he being he survives every time and comes back safely to his native place after so many years of spending his life there.

My perception about Gulliver’s travels has definitely changed after reading all the parts,What i desire most in the other novels is missing here .Being a realistic person i don’t really find a strong reason to call it a great book. Many of my readers may not agree with what i said but this is all i feel about this novel. My journey with Gulliver’s travels was not as good as i thought.I would prefer clinging to my childhood memory about the story of Gulliver the voyager.

“She was freed when kidnapped”

Image

HIghway” one of the masterpieces of Imtiaz ali,the man known for his amazing concepts in.It is a tale about a girl who was kidnapped right before her wedding ceremony, when she sneaked out of her house for a long drive with her fiance in the highway. The gang who kidnapped her panicked when they found out that she is the daughter of a rich business tycoon  and has links with the government. This marked the beginning of veera ‘s journey, she was transported to different cities to avoid being tracked by the police. At one point while crossing a check post their truck was stopped by the police, they forcefully checked the truck and to much of our surprise they couldn’t see anyone inside the truck,it was empty. This came as a shocker to her abductor Mahabir bhati who was lost in the thoughts of where she could have vanished from the truck, how could she escape from a moving truck?.Just when they were set free by the police they hurried down the road and stopped their truck to find out the mystery behind her absence, and when they opened the back door of the truck they found veera sitting there with a confused look on her face, she could hardly figure out what was happening. Mahabir bhati  with much of his astonishment asked her “why did u hid yourself ? this was the chance you got to escape from here ?”.”I don’t know” was the reply which he got from her.

Veera still clueless about her act dozed off to get rid of the war which was taking place inside her mind.

She was a girl who had never ever in her life faced any kind of a crisis, she was given whatever she desired, born with a silver spoon in her mouth life was as beautiful for her as it can be with all the luxuries at her doorstep. Many of us dream for the kind of life she was leading as most of us are attracted to all such luxurious things,we think to be more powerful and rich is the only mantra of staying happy. But has anyone of us ever thought that people with lots of money, power and fame are the ones with maximum problems in their lives. In the materialistic world feelings, emotions and relations hardly matter to people, they are simply born to make money and become powerful.

Veera didn’t wanted to go back to her home, she was happy with the oppressor and the kind of treatment she was getting from him.Why ?wasn’t she missing her Audi rides ? her five star parties ? her wardrobe of expensive clothes ? her box of solitaires and diamonds ?.

No.She wasn’t because she never got what she badly needed or wanted “Freedom”.she never got freedom but now she was FREE.

Free from all the bondage’s of the rich class, free from all fake people around her and free from all the materialistic and emotionless things.

During her journey she shared one of her tales of oppression  with her oppressor Mahabir. She told him about one of her uncle who use to bring her imported chocolates and give them to her inside the BATHROOM.He use to press her mouth hard so that her voice couldn’t reach outside.”Don’t tell anyone” he use to say.She was 9,when this incident took place and every time during his visit to her place he repeated his “Chocolate giving ceremony”.

One day she gathered all her courage and discussed this with her mother.”Don’ t tell anyone” her mother said.

This was the end for veera, she lost all her hopes and continued living her life like a dead soul, who was just living to show the world that she was alive and not living for herself.

Gradually a strange bond begun to develop between Veera and Mahabir, she found solace with him,she felt she was leading a better life .In her views he was not an oppressor, how could she call him an oppressor when the one who has committed such a heinous crime was living freely and unnoticed by everyone. She really felt free, she didn’t want to go back but also didn’t want to reach where she was being taken, she only wanted her highway journey to continue without reaching any destination.

Mahabir many a times decided to set her free ,he even persuaded her to run away but she was not willing to leave his side. And so they found a small house in the hills and decided to spent their life there. But one fine morning Mahabir was shot dead by the cops and Veera was anesthetized and brought back to her house. When she gained consciousness she told her parents how free she was with mahabir, how the life was at ease when she was with him but they killed him.She told the story of her uncle to her parents in presence of her uncle.Surprisingly there was no reaction from any of her family members,it looked like as though they were aware of it.Her father even asked her to be sensible, there was no reaction from the father who just heard about how his daughter was molested when she was just a small child. He stood so emotionless,so dreadful a sight for a daughter to see his father with absolutely no reaction.

She was completely devastated emotionally, mentally and  physicaly.she decided to go back to the place where she and mahabir had spent some beautiful moments. She didn’t wanted to stay with people who call her their daughter and yet behave like the most brutal est creatures of this earth.
so yes “she was freed when kidnapped “

Scala ‘s love story !

she saw him come

in the fading rays of sun.

His face glittered with joy and pride

as he was sitting on his favorite ride

She looked earnestly at him

He too looked up

But couldn’t see anything as the lights were dim

She fell for him at the first sight

And her eyes shown bright

Everyday she waited for him to pass by

The very thought of him made her shy

He felt a strong connection with that place

He so wanted to see her beautiful place

He went to meet her one day

Decent and generous were his ways

She opened the door

And was dumbstruck

In her thoughts she thanked the god and praised her luck

But alas ! this didn’t last for long

This was the end of that beautiful song

She smashed the door on his face

She cried and cried and cried

Until her river of tears dried

“Why have you made me deaf and dumb?”.She asked god

And hit her throat hard with an iron rod

“It has no right to live, when it couldn’t utter

those three words to the person i love “.

She fell on the floor and died

She could neither be his girlfriend nor his wife

So she ended herself and her life.

Alone in a crowd !

Ever stayed alone in the crowd ?

When there is a lot of noise

but none enter your ears

When there is a lot to see

but you become blind

when you have a lot to speak

but no face appears familiar

when you want to laugh

but no hands to give you a high five

when you want to cry

but all the shoulders are preoccupied

when there is a lot of things to do

but nothing to do all of a sudden

This is the pain of staying alone in the crowd

when there is everything around you

but still you find none…

From heaven to nomans land !

And there i stand

in the nomans land

where people have gained

and their virtues have changed

where there is no place for feelings

everyone busy in their own dealings

where hatred is the only way

i hate him,i hate her thats what people say

where people have murdered each other in their mind

and there is no place for faithful and kind

you flatter you win

you don’t go inside the bin

and still there i stand

with a dragger in my hand

hope to save this nomans land….
